The Thar is not a bad off-roader. While we gloated in the Thar on our way over the trail , we started having some apprehensions about the kind of obstacles we'd encounter once we got there. The 540 easily kept up with the Thar in straight line. But the Thar has better poise through corners, lifeless steering notwithstanding. At Rs. 6.3 lakhs all you get is a blower and a heater; so be ready to sweat. That climbed up the hill without any drama. We powered up the hill but the Thar stopped just short of the crest with an expensive sounding bang. On checking , we found out that one of the lower arms has perched itself nicely on the rock. Thar does 100kph in 16.4 secs. The leafy spring suspension although brilliant off-road, just doesn't cope well on tarmac and at high speed.
Every time you hit a bump, you feel like you're in the tumble dry stage of a washing machine. Definitely not nice if you had a large meal. Okay, so the Thar is no S-class, but it rides much better and doesn't insists on force-feeding you the texture of the road. And at also isn't such an animal when you need to go around bends. Thar was quite good on tarmac.
At 6.28 lakh, the Thar definitely needs air-con at least, if not also a hard-top , slight;y better interiors would' hurt, either- hey you are spending close to Rs 7 lakh on this!
